Virat Kohli is at the top of his game and his fitness level is keeping him ahead everybody else. Everybody wants to know about his fitness secret, while some may have read something about it on Internet but would it get any better than he himself revealing his secrets and fitness journey?

Virat became more serious about his fitness post an ordinary IPL in 2012. Not only he changed his eating habits but upgraded his training hours after he realized how important it is to be in shape if you want to survive the rigours of being involved in all the three formats.

In today’s time, if you want to perform well in all the formats of the game you need a routine. And by that I mean a predefined and structured pattern of your training. Being fitter strengthened me mentally as well. He admits that initially it was quite tough to follow the strict training sessions.

I realized that it was time for a change after I stepped into the 2012 IPL with a thought that I would perform well this entire season. I wanted to dominate every bowler and rule the tournament. It was a lot of struggle because my training back then was not up to the mark, I was on an unhealthy diet, I was up till 3 am. I was regularly having a drink or two. The entire mind-set of mine was disturbing. The IPL season ended and I was so glad that at least it was over. After crashing home and coming out of the shower one day, I looked at myself in the mirror and said to myself that I can’t afford to look like this if I want to make a name in this game.

I was like 11 or 12 kg heavier than I am now. I made a lot of changes from the next morning from what I eat to how I train. I was sweating in the gym for 90 minutes every day. It was tough keeping up with the balanced diet. For the first two months I was so hungry that I felt I wanted to eat the bed sheet when I went to sleep. I was craving delicious food. But then I saw the results of those training hours. I felt quick around the field. I would wake up in morning feeling energized.

I made changes again in my training from 2015. I was lifting heavy weights and it was insane and pretty unbelievable when I saw the results. I remember I felt more strength in my legs while chasing the ball in a Test series in Sri Lanka. It was, like, ‘wow’. This training is addictive. The last 18 months training has taken my game to another level.” he explained.

We all are aware how badly he wants and his team to be the fittest in the world. He gives so much importance to training because he knows his being in proper shape would always help Indian side to achieve a little more at home and overseas as well.
