Eminem’s ex-wife gets probation for driving under influence (DUI) last October in which she tried to attempt suicide by driving into a pole.
Kim Mathers was sentenced to a fine and probation and will avoid jail time after a drunk driving. Apart from one year probation, Kim Mathers also had to pay a $900 fine and will undergo random alcohol and drug testing following her suicide attempt.
Kim Mathers apologized for her actions, calling them ‘selfish and destructive’ outside the court.
During the DUI interview last year she said ‘I sat at the end of a road where I knew that no one else but myself would get hurt.’ She further added ‘Yes, I drank, yes I took pills and I hit the gas and aimed for a pole. I didn’t take into consideration the safety of others and the feelings of my family and I’m truly sorry.’
Her attorney, Michael Smith did most of the talking and told the judge the accident has had a very deep effect on his client, who has been receiving counselling and has been sober for more than one year.
Kim and Eminem married in 1999, but split two years later. Referring to her widely known relationship with Eminem he said ‘Her life has been a fishbowl, it’s been magnified with anything she does because of who she was married to. It’s unfair, but she understands it, and that goes with the territory’. The judge Shepherd noted during the hearing that Kim Mathers received no special treatment in her courtroom and said ‘I don’t care about the celebrity’.
After sentencing, Mathers paid her fine, and answered few questions of the reporters while reiterating her regret for putting the public at risk.
