The 44th Annual American Music Awards took place on November 20, 2016, at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

The awards were full of jaw dropping performances including John Legend’s passionate performance of “Love Me Now,” Bruno Mars’ funky “24K Magic”, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj’s raunchy “Side To Side” duet and many more.

Drake the rapper, was nominated for 13 awards and he won the “Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album” award and he greeted the actress Nina Dobrev who presented him with his award. “Thank you very much. Me and Nina were on ‘Degrassi’ together by the way,” he said. “I really want to thank everybody who helped me make this album. I want to thank the city of Toronto, and of course I want to thank the fans and my parents. My dad’s here tonight.”

Justin Bieber bagged 4 awards out of 5 nominations.  On top of the list he won “Favourite Pop/Rock Album” for his album “Purpose” and “Favorite Pop Song” from the same album for “Love Yourself” song.

When Prince‘s sister, Tyka Nelson, gave a heart-touching emotional speech as she took the stage to accept the award for “Best Soundtrack” for “Purple Rain” on behalf of her brother. “Prince defied the odds, a Black teen from Minneapolis with a goal to electrify the world. He had the courage to be different,” Nelson said. “With his vision and god-given talent, he is still one of the world’s most respected and loved artists.”

During the performance of “Bang Bang”, the punk rockers Green Day got bit political and shouted repeatedly “No Trump, no KKK, and no fascist USA” six times.

The most delighting moment of the night was when Robert Downey Jr. presented Sting with the American Music Awards’ “Award of Merit.” The actor had the audience on their feet as he sang a medley of his greatest hits “I Can’t Stop Thinking About You”, “Message In A Bottle”, and “Every Breath You Take”.
